Market town in the Inn Valley with mining history and a museum
Brixlegg is a market town in the Inn Valley, on the edge of the Alpbachtal. It is one of the oldest settlements in Tyrol and was first mentioned in 788. For centuries life here revolved around mining and processing copper and silver; the state-owned smelter was the largest in Tyrol. That past still shapes the town.
The Tiroler Bergbau- und Hüttenmuseum, housed in the old school of 1876, shows on about 400 m2 how ore was once mined and smelted. Schloss Matzen itself cannot be visited, but the castle park is open to walkers. The Innradweg runs along the Inn, and the Burgenweg links Brixlegg to Rattenberg past castles and viewpoints.
Brixlegg has a railway station and is a shopping town, so a practical stop on the way. For families from Niederau it fits well with Rattenberg, the glass town, or a day in Alpbach. Check opening times of the museum and park beforehand. This gives families a compact, varied stop with history, walking and cycling close together.
