Alpbachtal
Quiet village in the Tyrolean lowlands, near Lake Zireiner and the Rofan range
Münster (in Tirol) sits on a low rise at the foot of the Rofan mountains in the Alpbachtal, at about 534 m. The village has just over 3,000 residents and lies near the River Inn between Wörgl and Rattenberg. It is a calm place without heavy tourist crowds.
The surroundings are what it is best known for: Lake Zireiner, a small mountain lake beneath the Rofanspitze, is regarded as one of the most photographed mountain lakes in Tyrol. In the village you will find the parish church and several chapels, and the coat of arms shows a dancer with two gloves, a nod to the glove dance held on Whit Monday.
For families, Münster works well as the base for a relaxed day out: a swim at the open-air pool with its large sunbathing lawn, a mountain walk, a horse-drawn carriage ride or, in winter, a toboggan run. From Niederau it is roughly half an hour away. Bear in mind that the village itself is small and has no big nightlife. If you want a full day, Münster combines well with Rattenberg or Alpbach. In the mountains always bring sturdy shoes and clothing for changeable weather, and check the forecast and opening times beforehand.
