Westendorf lies at the entrance to the Brixental, on a sunny plateau below the Choralpe, at roughly 800 metres. The village has more than 3,700 inhabitants and is known for its carefully tended flower displays: it was once named one of Europe's prettiest flower villages in the Entente Florale competition.
In summer a wide network of signposted walking paths and cycle routes starts here, running through the Windautal and across the alpine pastures. In the summer months the Alpenrosenbahn takes you up to the Talkaser at around 1,770 metres. There you will find Alpinolino, a discovery area for children with nature and wildlife trails, plus a viewpoint over the Brixental and the Hohe Tauern. In high summer there are special play days for children.
In winter Westendorf belongs to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, with lifts starting close to the village. For a family from Niederau it makes a relaxed day out in a different valley, with more space and fewer crowds than Kitzbühel.
