Brixental and Kitzbühel Alps

Hopfgarten im Brixental

Brixental village with a gondola up the Hohe Salve

Hopfgarten im Brixental lies at roughly 620 metres above sea level at the foot of the Hohe Salve, at the entrance to the Brixental, between Wörgl and Kitzbühel. It is a market municipality and one of the villages of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental ski area. The most eye-catching sight is the twin-towered Baroque church from the eighteenth century, dedicated to Saints James and Leonard. The village is a pleasant place for a day out from Niederau, in both winter and summer.

The Hohe Salve is the showpiece of the area. A gondola, the Salvenbahn, takes you in two sections in under half an hour almost to the top at about 1,828 metres. There you get a 360-degree panorama, from the Wilder Kaiser and the Hohe Tauern with the Grossglockner to the Kitzbühel Alps. On the summit stands the Salvenkirchlein, a pilgrimage chapel from 1777 at about 1,829 metres, regarded as the highest-lying pilgrimage church in Austria.

In the village itself, from late spring through summer you can visit the leisure park Salvenaland, with a bathing lake and a mini-golf course, a welcome change especially for children. In winter the lifts to the slopes of the SkiWelt start from Hopfgarten, so from here too you can make a ski day on the other side of the area.
