Torchlight walk in the Wildschönau
Evening winter walk by torchlight in the Wildschönau
Activities
Climbing parks, rafting, canyoning and other active outings in the region.
Those travelling with older children or teenagers often want something more exciting than a walk. In and around the Wildschönau there are climbing opportunities and adventurous family activities. According to tourist sources the valley has a high ropes course with more than 29 stations at heights of 17 to 21 metres, complemented by a zip line. The play trails in Niederau and the Drachental leisure park in Oberau, with a summer bobsleigh run of over a kilometre among other things, are also interesting for active children.
For rafting and canyoning you travel further afield, for example to the Zillertal. There, providers offer family trips on the Ziller with a minimum age of about six, and canyoning for children aged roughly six to twelve in the Zemmschlucht. More demanding packages sometimes require a minimum age of about ten. The activities run under the supervision of trained guides who provide equipment and instruction.
Mind the minimum age, height and fitness that apply to each activity, and book in advance, especially in high season. Weather plays a big role: in rain or high water activities may be cancelled. The individual adventures are described below; always check current conditions with the provider. Allow half a day to a full day per activity, including travel there and back, and keep a quieter programme ready for the day after.

Adventure activities are generally available from May to September, depending on provider and weather. Many providers set a minimum age and sometimes a minimum height or weight; check this in advance. For children who like a challenge, high ropes courses are a good start, while rafting and canyoning generally need more nerve and fitness. For trips outside the Wildschönau allow some travel time by car. Start with a simple activity to see what suits your children.
Choose a recognised provider that works with certified guides and well-maintained equipment. Listen carefully to the instructions, wear the supplied helmet and harness and do not overestimate yourself. Wear suitable clothing and shoes and mind your health: if in doubt about fitness, pregnancy or medical conditions, consult the provider beforehand. Never let children climb a course unsupervised. For rafting and canyoning, establish beforehand whether children can swim and feel at ease in water.
