Mayrhofen

Well-known village at the end of the Zillertal, with Penken and Ahorn

Mayrhofen lies at the end of the main Zillertal, where the valley branches into smaller side valleys, among them the Tuxertal and the Zillergrund. It is one of Tyrol's best-known holiday resorts, with a lively centre full of shops, cafés and restaurants. The village sits much lower than Gerlos or Hintertux, so it is pleasant to visit even outside the peak season.

The resort draws visitors in every season and has two mountains of its own. The Penken, almost 1,800 metres high, has an action area with a summer toboggan run, a mountain playground and giant balls for walking across the reservoir. On the Ahorn, at about 2,000 metres, the Ahornbahn is Austria's largest cable car, and the plateau has a walking loop with viewing platforms and a birds-of-prey show. In summer the lifts run roughly from late May or early June until early or mid-October; in winter Penken and Ahorn form part of the ski area.

For families staying in Niederau, Mayrhofen is a good day trip of about an hour and five minutes by car. Combine a ride on a mountain lift with a walk and a visit to the village. Check the current operating times beforehand.
