Village stroll in Brixen im Thale
Summer A quiet Brixental village with a large parish church and the Brixner Stadl
Brixental and Kitzbühel Alps
Village at the highest point of the Brixental, with the Filzalmsee
Brixen im Thale lies at about 794 metres above sea level and forms the highest point of the Brixental, in the Kitzbühel Alps. The municipality has around 2,700 residents and covers about 31 square kilometres. Besides the village itself it includes the hamlets of Feuring, Hof, Lauterbach and Sonnberg. It is a well-known tourist resort with a wide range of things to do, and lies further south in the valley than Hopfgarten and Itter, at the foot of the Hohe Salve.
In winter there is a demanding ski area around the Hohe Salve, part of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental. In the village itself there are swimming pools and natural bathing spots. Above the village lies the Hochbrixen hiking area, whose popular goal is the ErlebnisWelt Filzalmsee. There you find the lake itself and plenty to do for all ages, including a peat-bog wading pool and a water playground, which makes it an attractive family destination. Check beforehand the current opening times and what is possible in each season.
A second sight is the Brixner Stadl, a fine wooden barn from the nineteenth century that is now used as a cultural centre, with concerts, exhibitions and other events. The whole surrounding area also suits hiking and cycling, with numerous mountain and themed walks, and the Hohe Salve, the highest peak of the Kitzbühel Alps, offers a far-reaching view.
About 35 minutes by car from Niederau: via Oberau to Wörgl, then through the Brixental. Estimate.
