Stumm

Small village opposite Kaltenbach with a manor and swimming area

Stumm is a small holiday village in the heart of the Zillertal, opposite Kaltenbach, at about 556 metres. The village is quiet and easy to get around, with many walking and cycling routes of every level in the surroundings.

In the centre stands Stumm Manor from 1551, a Tyrolean-style noble residence with a lushly planted park; it can be viewed from outside. The late-Gothic parish church of St. Rupert has ceiling frescoes by Christof Anton Mayr and reliefs by Nißl from 1765. In summer the Badewelt Stumm is a favourite for families, with several water slides, a children's pool and a beach volleyball court.

Every two years in high summer the international culture festival stummer schrei takes place, with theatre, concerts, readings, exhibitions and film. From Niederau, Stumm is a good target for a relaxed summer day with children: swimming, a short walk and a visit to the village. In winter the Zillertal Arena and other ski areas are a short drive away. Allow plenty of time for the drive through the valley, as traffic in the Zillertal can be busy in high season and at weekends; an early start is best.
