Kaltenbach is a village in the Zillertal at about 558 m, a few kilometres from the A12. It belongs to the Erste Ferienregion im Zillertal, together with Fügen, Ried and Hochfügen among others. The village itself is rural and quiet; the real draw is the mountain above it.
From Kaltenbach the Hochzillertal cable car climbs to the Hochzillertal area. Since 2004 this ski area has been linked with Hochfügen, together offering around 86 km of pistes up to almost 2,400 m. In summer the higher ground is a walking area along the Zillertaler Höhenstraße. At the Kaltenbacher Skihütte, at roughly 1,800 m, you will find the Murmelland with marmots, a playground, a small petting zoo and a water play area. The village also has a stop on the Zillertalbahn, the steam railway between Jenbach and Mayrhofen.
