Hiking in Tyrol's largest nature park around Eng and the Ahornboden
The Karwendel Nature Park is a vast protected mountain area in Tyrol that extends into Bavaria. Around Hinterriß and the hamlet of Eng there are quiet walking paths with little climbing, suitable for families. The route through the Enger Grund and along the Große Ahornboden is about 3 km long with roughly 250 m of ascent.
The Ahornboden has been a protected natural monument since 1972 and is known for its ancient sycamore maples. Next to the restaurant at Eng there is a large playground, and the Eng Alm has a farm shop with its own products. The final stretch to Eng is a toll road, reachable between May and the end of October. Bring a map and enough supplies.
Hinterriß and Eng are about 1.5 hours by car from Niederau, via the Achensee or the Rißtal; the last stretch to Eng is a toll road. It is a long day trip, so start early.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
Yes, the walk through the Enger Grund (about 3 km) is gentle and there is a large playground at Eng.
