Bavarian mountain village with rock faces, violin-making tradition and walks

Mittenwald lies in Bavaria at about 930 m, between the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains. The village is known as an important centre of violin making and has a pedestrian zone lined with painted facades. In the Geigenbaumuseum you can see stringed instruments from the local tradition.

Many walking routes start around the village, for example up the Kranzberg with views of the Wetterstein range, or to the Lautersee and Ferchensee lakes. The Leutasch Geisterklamm gorge is also nearby, and the Karwendelbahn cable car takes you up to around 2,300 m. It is a long drive from Niederau, so allow a full day.
