Panoramic toll road with glacier views and walking options
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a toll road through the Hohe Tauern National Park, about 48 km long with 36 hairpin bends. It is open only in the warmer months, from early May until late October or early November. Opening hours are longest from June to August (roughly 5:30 to 21:00) and shorter in spring and autumn.
A well-known destination is the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at about 2,369 m, with views of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier. There are many viewpoints and walking options on the way. It is a long day trip: bring warm clothing, as it is cool high in the mountains.
From Niederau it is about 1.5 hours by car to Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße (via Kitzbühel, Pass Thurn and Zell am See); from there you head up the mountain road. Allow a full day.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
In 2026 a day pass for a car costs € 41.50 when bought in advance (for example via the ÖAMTC); the rate at the toll gate is higher. Check the current rate beforehand.
