Alpenzoo Innsbruck

Theme zoo devoted solely to Alpine animals, above Innsbruck

The Alpenzoo sits at 727 metres near the Hungerburg above Innsbruck and is among the highest-situated zoos in Europe. It is a theme zoo: you only see animals of the Alps and Europe's mountain regions, such as bears, wolves, lynx, ibex, chamois and bearded vultures. In total there are more than 2,000 animals of about 150 species, on grounds of just over four hectares.

The enclosures are designed to look natural, and there are aquariums and terrariums too. The grounds are on a slope, so expect some climbing. A visit fits well into a day in Innsbruck; the Hungerburgbahn takes you up from the city.
