Workshops and crafts in the area

Try glass, wood, cheese or bread yourself: crafts for young and old.

A workshop is a lovely way to take something of the region home. In Tyrol crafts have a long tradition: wood carving, glasswork, making cheese and butter, baking bread and working with wool or leather. In the Wildschönau there is also a distilling tradition: Krautinger, made from stubble turnips, appears in the Austrian register of traditional foods. At some places guests can make something under guidance, at others you watch in a workshop or on a farm.

The best-known glass address nearby is Kisslinger Kristall-Glas in Rattenberg, where you can watch glassblowers, cutters and engravers at work. According to the provider you can blow your own crystal glass ball there with a master's help on Monday and Friday afternoons from May to October; ask for the current times. At the Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe in Kramsach, Prügeltorte is baked, a Tyrolean speciality made over an open fire.

For children it is often a highlight, because they really get something in their hands. What is available depends on season and provider; some workshops run only in summer or holidays, others on request. Ask in advance whether booking is needed, what the minimum age is, how long it lasts and whether there is a choice of language.

Tips

  • Ask beforehand about age, duration and booking.
  • Wear clothes that can get dirty.
  • Pack your creation carefully for transport.
  • Combine a workshop with a museum or farm visit.
  • Ask whether instruction is available in English or German.

What to expect

Workshops usually last from one to a few hours and are meant for beginners. You get instructions, materials and help, and often make something small to take with you. Some providers organise it separately for children, at others parents and children take part together. Wear clothes that may get dirty and expect a contribution for materials; prices vary greatly and are not listed here. Glass and fire come with strict safety rules, so listen closely to the instructor and keep young children close.

Season and booking

Many small providers work by appointment, especially outside the holidays. According to the provider, tours and demonstrations at Kisslinger in Rattenberg are available by appointment and in several languages. Get in touch a few days or weeks beforehand via your accommodation or the provider itself. In peak season places are limited. In bad weather an indoor workshop is a good choice for a day without hiking plans. In winter the offer is smaller, so ask in good time.
