Plansee: walking and swimming

Large mountain lake near Reutte with trails and bathing spots

The Plansee lies in the Reutte area in north-western Tyrol, between wooded slopes and limestone walls, and is one of Tyrol's largest mountain lakes. A circuit of about 14.6 km takes a little over three hours and starts at the Seespitze car park. Along the route there are places to eat and many spots for a swim; at two landing stages you can shorten the walk by boat.

If you want a shorter walk with children, take the panorama path of about 6 km along the Zwieselberg from Seespitze. This is a day trip: the drive is long, so bring swimwear and something to eat.

Practical

From Niederau you drive via the A12 and the Fernpass route to Reutte (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Parking at the lake may be charged; check on the spot. Public transport is awkward, so the car is most practical.

Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
