Wellness and relaxation in the Wildschönau

Sauna, calm and mountain walks: recover after a day of skiing or hiking.

After an active day in the mountains, relaxation matters as much as the day itself. In Austria wellness is part of the holiday: many hotels in the Wildschönau have their own sauna area, often with a Finnish sauna, steam room, aroma cabin and sometimes an indoor pool. Some also have a heated outdoor pool that opens in summer. This suits the calm character of the valley.

For parents with children it is a pleasant change of pace. Many facilities have separate times for families, and there is often a quiet area for adults. One of you can slip into the sauna while the other swims with the children, and vice versa. In the Wildschönau, guests of many accommodations receive the Wildschönau Card, which according to providers includes access to the public swimming pool in summer; ask at your accommodation what is part of your stay.

If you have more time, you can try a massage or a treatment. Exactly what is on offer differs by accommodation and season. Always ask in advance about opening times, age limits and reservations, and read the house rules. A visit feels better when you know what to expect.

Tips

  • Ask about family hours and age limits.
  • Bring a large towel and flip-flops.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after the sauna.
  • Book treatments or massages in good time.
  • Keep sauna sessions with children short.

Sauna etiquette

In Austria and Germany people often sit in the sauna without swimwear, on a towel. This is customary, but the rules vary by venue: there may be separate textile days or children's hours. Bring a large towel, shower beforehand and keep your voice low. If it is your first time, watch how others do it or ask the staff. Drink enough water, build up the heat gradually and take time between rounds to cool down and rest. Mobile phones usually do not belong in the sauna room.

With children and health

For young children a long sauna session is usually unsuitable; many facilities set a minimum age or require supervision. Keep sessions short and do not leave children in the heat too long. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or have heart problems, consult a doctor first. Some facilities are for hotel guests only; ask whether day visitors are welcome. A walk in the fresh air or a quiet hour in the pool is also a form of relaxation.
