Winter hike from the Markbachjoch to Niederau
Ride up and walk back down to the valley through winter scenery
This winter hike starts at the mountain station of the Markbachjochbahn and runs almost entirely downhill back to Niederau. The lift takes about 10 minutes to reach the top. The route is about 10.5 km long, takes around 4 hours and is described as moderately difficult, with roughly 676 m of descent and a highest point of about 1,460 m.
You walk over gentle slopes and through sections of forest, past traditional farmhouses in Penningdörfl and Rotenau, and across meadows back to the valley. There is a chapel in Penningdörfl. There are places to eat along the way, such as Leam Wirt before Penningdörfl, and several in Niederau. It is a varied walk with plenty of panorama, but it does require some fitness and suitable footwear.
