The Wildschönau valley has about 50 km of cross-country trails, spread across the villages: roughly 16 km at Oberau, 14 km at Niederau and 10 km at Auffach. The landscape is open and rolling, with views of the surrounding mountains. Near Niederau there is, among others, the trail between Oberau and Niederau (about 3.8 km, intermediate).
Cross-country skiing is a calm sport for families who want to move together at their own pace. The trails are free to use and usually open well into March, depending on snow. Ask the tourist office for the current map and about lessons or equipment rental. Combine a route with lunch at a Gasthof.
