Snow fun without skis: sledging, winter walking, snowshoeing and more.
A winter holiday in Niederau is not only about skiing. If you prefer a calmer time or are travelling with young children, the Wildschönau offers many ways to enjoy the snow. The high valley is described as snow-reliable and, according to local tourist information, has about 40 kilometres of prepared winter walking paths and some 50 kilometres of cross-country trails.
For sledging there is a toboggan run of several kilometres at the Lanerköpfl chairlift in Niederau. Between Niederau and Oberau runs the Franziskusweg, a quiet walk for a moment of calm, and from the Schönangeralm at the head of the valley both easy snowshoe walks and more demanding tours begin. A horse-drawn sleigh ride is also part of the offer. Many of these activities need no experience.
Availability depends on snow and weather, so check beforehand whether runs and paths are open. For children, simply playing is often enough: building a snowman, sliding on a bobsleigh or having a snowball fight. Warm clothing and waterproof boots are half the job. The individual winter activities are described below. Many of these activities combine well with an afternoon at a mountain hut, a cup of hot chocolate or a portion of kaiserschmarrn.

When and for whom?
Winter fun is mostly available from December into March, depending on snow. The activities are largely suitable for the whole family, including non-skiers. Small children can often join on quiet runs or simply play in the snow, while older children can sledge or take a short snowshoe tour. Combine an activity in the morning with a long break in a mountain hut so that nobody gets overtired.
Safety and clothing
Dress in layers, wear waterproof gloves and boots and bring a hat. Sledge on the designated runs and preferably with a helmet for children. Keep your distance from other sledgers and brake in good time. When winter walking, stay on the marked, prepared paths and avoid steep slopes with avalanche risk. Check current conditions and the opening times of the lift and run before you leave. Bring a flask of something hot.
