The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, of which Niederau is part, starts the 2026/27 winter season on 4 December 2026. On that day part of the lifts will run. These include the Schatzbergbahn in Auffach, the Wiedersbergerhornbahn in Alpbach and the Pöglbahn. Other parts, such as the link between the Alpbachtal and the Wildschönau and the Reitherkogelbahn, are planned to follow in mid-December.
The season runs until about 4 April 2027, depending on snow. Regular operating hours are generally around 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. Whether a particular lift or slope is open on a given day depends on snowfall and grooming, especially in the first weeks.
So if you come to Niederau in December you can already ski, but not always across the whole area. Before you leave, check the ski area's website for current operating times and snow reports, and confirm with your accommodation what is open. Changes caused by the weather are always possible. As the Christmas period follows quickly, it is wise to arrange lift passes, ski school and any equipment rental well before you leave.

In mid-December more sections are added, including the link between the Alpbachtal and the Wildschönau and the Reitherkogelbahn. Once the link is running you can ski from one valley to the other and both areas form a single whole again: the Ski Juwel. The exact date depends on snow and on the lift company's planning. If you want to see the whole area, the safest bet is to plan from the Christmas holidays onwards. Even then the exact date can shift with snow conditions.
