Decorated cattle, market and music at the Schatzbergbahn on 18 September 2027
18 September 2027
At the end of summer the cattle come down from the high alpine pastures to the valley. In Tyrol this is a celebration called the Almabtrieb. In Auffach, the highest village in the Wildschönau, the return grows into a big public festival at the valley station of the Schatzbergbahn. In 2027 it takes place on Saturday 18 September, from 10 am to 6 pm. The 2026 edition was on 19 September.
The day starts at 10 am with a festive procession by the Auffach brass band. The decorated animals are then led into the village to applause and music; in 2026 there were more than 500 of them. Around the festival grounds you will find a crafts market and a farmers' market, live music and a children's programme.
For a family it is an easy and rewarding day out: according to the announcement admission is free (except for tour groups), and you see a living tradition up close. Details such as the exact order of events and the children's programme can vary from year to year. Check the current information with Wildschönau Tourism or the organiser before you go. Auffach lies at the foot of the Schatzberg, so you can combine the day with a walk or a ride on the cable car if it is running.

The programme runs from 10 am to 6 pm around the grounds at the Schatzbergbahn. After the opening by the village brass band, the cows arrive in the village in groups, decorated with flowers, ribbons and large headdresses. In between there is live music, along with stalls, food and drink. Children can join in the children's programme. Exactly when each group of animals arrives varies from year to year and is usually announced only shortly beforehand. Come early in the morning if you want to see the opening.
Besides the animals, the market is a reason to come. There is a crafts market with traditional handmade goods and souvenirs, and local farmers and producers present regional products, from cheese to schnapps. It is a good chance to take something home, such as cheese or a bottle of Krautinger, the famous Wildschönau turnip schnapps. Which stalls appear exactly differs from year to year. Bring a little cash, as not every stall accepts cards.
In summer the cows graze for months on the alpine pastures, cared for by herders and farmers. In September they return to the stables in the valley. If the summer has gone well and without accidents, the animals are festively decorated. The headdress is a sign of gratitude and pride. In many Tyrolean villages the return is therefore celebrated with a village festival. It is also the moment when the mountain farmers' season is officially brought to a close. The festival also shows how closely the village is tied to farming.
Auffach is about 10 kilometres from Niederau, roughly 15 minutes by car. A regular bus also runs through the valley; ask your accommodation for the timetable. Parking around the festival grounds is limited and roads may be temporarily closed, so arrive early or use public transport. In September the weather can change: bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes, as the ground may be wet or muddy. A rain jacket belongs in your bag.
On Saturday 18 September 2027, from 10 am to 6 pm. In 2026 it was on 19 September. Check the current dates with the organiser.
According to the announcement admission is free, except for tour groups. You pay for food, drink and market goods yourself.
This is not confirmed. The Almabtrieb usually goes ahead in changeable weather, but conditions can affect the programme. Ask Wildschönau Tourism beforehand.
