Skiing in Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau

Family-friendly skiing close to your door, with a large area nearby.

Niederau lies in Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, one of the larger ski areas in Tyrol, linking the valleys of Alpbach and the Wildschönau. According to the area's own information it offers about 114 kilometres of piste and some 45 lifts. From Niederau a modern 8-seater gondola takes you to the Markbachjoch at about 1,500 metres, so you are quickly on the slopes in the morning and back at your accommodation in the afternoon.

The area has a reputation for being family-friendly and relatively relaxed. Most of the offer consists of blue and red runs, complemented by a smaller share of black runs and marked ski routes. Beginners find practice slopes and ski schools in the villages, intermediate skiers many wide runs with mountain restaurants along the way. Those who want extreme descents will find more of a challenge in larger Alpine regions.

The season usually runs from early December to mid-April, depending on snow and weather. Snow reliability is generally best in high season, so check current snow and lift information before you leave. The individual ski activities, ski schools and outings nearby are described below. Ski passes, rental gear and lessons can often be reserved online or through your accommodation in advance; ask about current prices and conditions.

Tips

  • Book ski lessons and rental in advance during school holidays.
  • Start early: the slopes are at their best.
  • Pack spare gloves and goggles for children.
  • Plan a break in a mountain hut to warm up.
  • Check snow and lift information before you set off.

For whom?

The area suits families, beginners and intermediate skiers. Children can often start ski lessons from around three or four years old; ask the ski school about minimum age, group size and lesson times. Book lessons and equipment hire in advance where possible, especially during school holidays. Snowboarders are welcome and many slopes are suitable. With young children, plan short ski days with a long afternoon break in a mountain restaurant. Also ask about childcare and children's ski areas.

Safety and rules

The international FIS rules apply on the slopes: be considerate of others, adjust your speed and give way to those below or ahead of you. A helmet is strongly recommended for children and worn as standard by many families. Stay on marked slopes, heed avalanche warnings and take out travel or ski insurance that covers rescue costs. Use sun cream in winter too: at altitude you burn faster than you expect. Keep children in sight at all times.
