Guides and practical tips
Snowboarding in Niederau and Ski Juwel
Snowparks, lifts, lessons and safety for snowboarders in Niederau and Ski Juwel.
Snowboarding in Niederau works well: from the village (828 m) you are in Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, an area of more than 110 km of pistes and ski routes. The best-known snowboard spots are Snowpark Schatzberg near Auffach and Snowpark Alpbachtal with the Funslope on the Wiedersberger Horn. Both are confirmed parts of Ski Juwel.
Beginners find ski schools with snowboard lessons in the Wildschönau and a beginner area with drag lifts and a conveyor belt on the Schatzberg. Advanced riders can combine the Niederau sector with the parks, and freeriders look to the Wiedersberger Horn, but only with avalanche knowledge and the Tyrol bulletin to hand.
This page covers snowparks, lifts, lessons, safety, rental, tobogganing and après-ski. Season and offer vary, so check current information with Ski Juwel before you leave.

Tips
- Book snowboard lessons early in holiday weeks and ask about age limit and meeting point.
- Practise drag lifts on a quiet day first and ask for routes without them.
- Check current park info with Ski Juwel: features and snow change.
- Go off-piste only with the Tyrol avalanche bulletin, equipment and experience or a guide.
- Plan a tobogganing day as a rest day for the whole group.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
Where in Ski Juwel is best for snowboarding?
According to the sources used, Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau has more than 110 km of pistes and ski routes spread over four sectors. Two of them are linked by lifts, while the other two are reached by the free ski bus. From Niederau you are straight in the Niederau sector, with tree-lined runs that give more shelter in bad weather but mainly suit confident riders. For snowparks you head on to the Schatzberg near Auffach or to the Wiedersberger Horn near Inneralpbach. Terrain varies per season and snow cover, so check current information with Ski Juwel before you choose.
Snowparks and the Funslope
Snowpark Schatzberg lies near run 12, above the reservoir, with obstacles for beginners and more advanced riders. Access is included with the lift pass. Sources describe the half-pipe differently (90 to 130 m), so do not rely on a fixed length. Snowpark Alpbachtal on the Wiedersberger Horn has its own snow guns, kickers, a half-pipe and a so-called advanced line for riders who are further along. The Funslope is also on the Wiedersberger Horn, and on the Schatzberg you will find the Wave Run (run 6) of roughly 300 m, a rolling track that is playful for snowboarders of any level.
Lifts and snowboarding: what to expect
The area has gondolas, chairlifts and drag lifts. For beginners there are several drag lifts and a conveyor belt at the Zwergenland on the Schatzberg. Which lifts exactly suit snowboarders has not been confirmed for every lift. As a snowboarder, watch out for flat sections and the approach to a lift: drag lifts and anchor lifts demand more balance, whereas in a gondola or on a chair you simply sit. If in doubt, ask at the valley station or your ski school which route avoids tricky drag lifts, and try a drag lift first on a quiet day.
Beginners, lessons and ski schools
There are ski schools in the Wildschönau that teach snowboarding, including in Niederau, where a meeting point near Hotel Alpenland is mentioned. Lessons are given in German, English and Dutch, among others. According to booking platforms, beginner group lessons often start at around 10 to 12 years; for younger children private lessons are usually the option. Offer, age limit and meeting point differ per school and season, so ask beforehand and book early in holiday weeks. A first day with an instructor saves many falls and is more worthwhile for snowboarding than for skiing.
Freeriding and safety
The Ski Juwel freeride area is at the Wiedersberger Horn (approx. 2,128 m) in Inneralpbach, next to the Hornbahn 2000. Off the marked pistes there is no piste patrol and no avalanche protection. Always consult the Tyrol avalanche bulletin (lawine.tirol.gv.at), carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, and go only with experience or a mountain guide. This guide does not replace that and is not a route description to follow blindly. Snowboarders get stuck more easily in deep, flat snow, which makes leaving the piste extra risky.
Rental and alternatives: tobogganing and more
Snowboards, boots and helmets are usually rented from rental shops in or near the ski area; ask your accommodation or ski school for the nearest one. If you prefer a day without a board, the Wildschönau has winter alternatives such as tobogganing. Which toboggan runs are open in season and whether they are lit varies; ask the tourist office before you set off. A tobogganing rest day suits families where not everyone snowboards.
Après-ski in Niederau and around
Après-ski in the Wildschönau is relaxed rather than a late-night party scene. Many huts and bars sit right on the slopes, so children can come along. Niederau has the most choice: the Schnapshütte and Bobo's Heustadl Bar are among those mentioned, and in high season they can get livelier in the afternoon. There are also drinks to be had at the valley station in Auffach and at the foot of the Schatzberg after the last run. Offer and times vary, so check on the spot.
