Mountain peaks around Niederau: hiking, cycling, ski touring and more

Twelve peaks in the Wildschönau and the neighbouring valleys, and what you can do there in summer and winter.

If you stay in Niederau, you can choose between dozens of peaks within an hour’s drive. Some are easy panorama summits with a mountain lift, others ask for a solid hike or winter know-how. This overview lines up twelve peaks, from the Roßkopf above the village to the Kellerjoch near Schwaz, and points to a separate article for each mountain.

For each summit you can read what is possible in summer (hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing) and in winter (skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing, tobogganing), as far as we could confirm it with reliable sources. Where we could not confirm something, we leave it out. Heights are approximate; sources sometimes differ by a few metres.

Tips

  • With children, choose a mountain with a lift, such as the Reither Kogel or the Spieljoch.
  • Check the weather before every trip and, in winter, the Tyrol avalanche bulletin.
  • Take an extra layer even in summer: at 2,000 m it quickly turns cool.
  • Plan your descent with the last lift as a safety net, but do not rely on it blindly.
  • Read the article on each mountain for details on the route and the huts.

Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.

In the Wildschönau: Roßkopf, Feldalphorn, Gratlspitz and Schatzberg

Above the village stands the Roßkopf (about 1,731 m), a summit hike from Niederau via the Halsgatterl. You reach the Feldalphorn (about 1,923 m) in summer from the Markbachjoch; in winter it is a ski touring goal. The Gratlspitz (about 1,895 m) is a steep mountain hike from Thierbach, and the Schatzberg (about 1,898 m) above Auffach can be reached by gondola and has plenty to offer in summer and winter.

Joelspitze and the peaks of the Alpbachtal

The Joelspitze (about 1,964 m) lies between the Wildschönau and the Alpbachtal and can be reached with the Schatzberg lift. The Wiedersberger Horn (about 2,127 m) above Alpbach is an easy summit hike with pistes and a ski touring route in winter. The Reither Kogel near Reith im Alpbachtal is a child-friendly family mountain with a gondola and a toboggan run.

Kitzbühel Alps and beyond: Hohe Salve, Kitzbüheler Horn, Hartkaiser, Spieljoch and Kellerjoch

The Hohe Salve (about 1,829 m) above Hopfgarten has a gondola, panorama paths and a pilgrimage church. The Kitzbüheler Horn (about 2,000 m) is known for its alpine flower garden, and the Hartkaiser (about 1,553 m) near Ellmau for its view of the Wilder Kaiser. For a day trip into the Zillertal there is the Spieljoch near Fügen, and the Kellerjoch (2,344 m) near Schwaz is a high summit with a cable car and ski touring routes.

Summer: hiking, cycling, mountain biking and climbing

In summer, hiking and mountain walking are the main activities on almost every peak; with a mountain lift you keep the climb short. Cycling and mountain biking are confirmed for only some mountains, and climbing or a via ferrata can be found on a few peaks such as the Kitzbüheler Horn. Read in each article which options are confirmed before you set out.

Winter: skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing and tobogganing

Many peaks have Ski Juwel or SkiWelt pistes, and some are also ski touring goals, such as the Feldalphorn, the Wiedersberger Horn, the Hohe Salve and the Kellerjoch. Snowshoeing and tobogganing are found mainly on the family mountains. For every route outside the piste: check the Tyrol avalanche bulletin beforehand.

Staying safe in the mountains

Mountain walking asks for good footwear, a weather forecast and time planning; summer thunderstorms and late-autumn snow can turn quickly. Ski touring and snowshoeing call for the avalanche bulletin, avalanche equipment and knowledge, or a mountain guide. Our articles are not route descriptions to follow blindly.
