Hiking the Joelspitze from Auffach: Schatzberg and Joel ridge

1,964 m between the Wildschönau and Alpbachtal: a ridge walk after the Schatzberg lift, ski tours in winter.

If you want to hike to the Joelspitze from Niederau, this is one of the finest outings in your own valley. The Joelspitze is 1,964 m high and lies in the Kitzbühel Alps on the border between the Wildschönau and the Alpbachtal. The usual route starts in Auffach: take the Schatzberg lift up and follow a gently rising ridge path to the summit. Sources give about 7.3 km, roughly three hours and around 400 m of climbing.

Auffach is about 10 km from Niederau, a drive of roughly fifteen minutes (approximate). The summit carries a striking statue of Mary, and the view stretches from the Karwendel to the Kaiser range and the Zillertal Alps. On the way you pass alpine meadows, small ponds and boggy ground.

In winter the Joelspitze is a known ski touring goal, for example from the Luegergraben in the Alpbachtal. Below you will find what is confirmed about summer, winter, huts and safety.

Tips

  • Start early in Auffach so you have plenty of time for the summit and the way back.
  • Check beforehand that the Schatzberg lift is running and until what time.
  • Bring a warm layer: it can be cool and windy on the ridge even in summer.
  • Want the longer circuit past the huts? Allow about 5 hours and carry extra drink.
  • For ski touring, always consult the Tyrol avalanche bulletin first.

Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.

About the mountain

The Joelspitze (also called Joel) is 1,964 m high and forms a calm, broad summit between the Alpbachtal and the Wildschönau. Coming from Auffach, you walk across the ridge landscape towards the Schatzberg; on the other side lies the Alpbachtal. The area around the top is a mix of alpine meadows, small ponds and boggy ground. The summit has a statue of Mary, which a tourism source calls exceptional. The view is wide: Karwendel, Kaiser range and the Zillertal Alps.

Getting there

From Niederau it is about fifteen minutes by car (approximately 10 km) to Auffach, where the Schatzberg lift leaves for the mountain station. From there you follow the ridge path to the Joelspitze and back to the Schatzberg, then ride the gondola down. You can also walk the whole way and descend directly to the valley station. An alternative is the approach from the other side: ski tourers start from the Luegergraben near Inneralpbach in the Alpbachtal. Check beforehand whether and when the lift runs.

Summer: hiking

The classic Schatzberg and Joel circuit is about 7.3 km and takes roughly three hours, with around 400 m of climbing; the path is a gently rising ridge route with a few moderately steep stretches. From the mountain station you pass small ponds and the Schatzberg summit cross. A longer variant of about 13.6 km and 5 hours passes the Gern reservoir and the Neuhöger Alm, Klettinger Alm and Starchent Alm on the way back to Auffach. Take water, rain gear and sturdy shoes, and keep an eye on the weather.

Winter: ski touring

The Joelspitze is a classic ski touring goal. A frequently cited route starts in the Luegergraben near Inneralpbach at about 1,100 m and leads past the Luegeralm (about 1,471 m) to the summit; sources give about 840 to 865 m of ascent and roughly 2 hours 15 minutes for the climb. The slopes are mostly open. One touring source says avalanche danger on this tour is generally low but points to a steeper slope above the Luegeralm that deserves extra attention. That does not make the tour risk-free: assess conditions afresh each day.

Winter: snowshoeing and skiing

Travel operators include the Joelspitze in guided snowshoe weeks, with a summit day of about 500 m of ascent and roughly 4 hours. I found no detailed, confirmed route for independent walkers; if in doubt, go with a guide. The Schatzberg above Auffach is also a well-known ski mountain of the Wildschönau, whose lifts get you close to the Joelspitze, but check locally what is open and what is permitted. Freeriders also list the Joel as a tour tip.

Huts and refreshments

The longer circuit passes three alpine pastures: the Neuhöger Alm, the Klettinger Alm and the Starchent Alm. There are also facilities at the Schatzberg mountain station and a stop around the Gern Alm. Which huts are open when, and what they serve, changes by season; ask beforehand, especially outside the summer months. To be safe, bring your own drinks and a snack.

Safety

Before every winter tour, check the Tyrol avalanche bulletin (lawine.tirol.gv.at). This guide does not replace the bulletin and is not a route description to follow blindly: if you do not know the route, go with a mountain guide. In summer the weather on the ridge path can change fast; do not leave your return until late and check the last gondola descent. The ridge is open, so there is little shelter in a thunderstorm. Take water, rain gear and a map or app.
