Guides and practical tips
Hohe Salve from Niederau: hiking and skiing near Hopfgarten
Gondola, panoramic walks and a pilgrimage chapel at 1,829 m, about 35 minutes by car from Niederau.
The Hohe Salve (about 1,829 m) is one of the best-known viewpoint mountains in the Kitzbühel Alps and the easiest way to turn a day from Niederau into a proper mountain outing. You drive to Hopfgarten im Brixental in about 35 minutes, board the gondola and reach the top after a ride of roughly twenty minutes. If you want to hike on the Hohe Salve or simply see a mountain summit without a hard climb, this is the place.
Up top you get a 360-degree panorama over the Kitzbühel Alps, the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern; on a clear day the Großglockner and Großvenediger can be seen in the distance. The summit is crowned by the Salvenkirchlein, described as the highest-lying pilgrimage church in Austria.
This guide explains how to get there, which walks start from the mountain, what it means in winter in connection with the SkiWelt, and what to bear in mind before you set off. Sources differ on the height by a metre; lifts and mountain restaurants have their own seasons, so always check in advance.

Tips
- Drive to Hopfgarten early: visibility is best and you will be back down before afternoon showers.
- Build the last gondola down into your day; head back an hour early rather than too late.
- Pack an extra layer and a rain jacket; it is noticeably cooler at the top than in the valley.
- If the weather is uncertain, pick another day: the mountain is mainly worth it for the view.
- Check the season and timetable of the gondola and huts before you leave.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
About the mountain
The Hohe Salve (about 1,829 m, some sources say 1,828 m) rises above Hopfgarten im Brixental and Itter, on the edge of the Kitzbühel Alps. It stands fairly free, so the views are open in every direction: towards the Wilder Kaiser, the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern. The mountain is also visible from Söll and the Wilder Kaiser area. From Niederau it makes a good day trip: roughly 30 to 35 minutes by car, depending on traffic and the route via Wörgl.
Getting there
From Hopfgarten two modern gondola stages carry you up, together covering well over 1,000 vertical metres in about twenty minutes. There is also a gondola link from Söll, handy if you want to explore the other side of the mountain, though you then need a way back to your car. The summer lift runs in a fixed season, from mid-May to late October at the time of writing, but always check the current timetable and the last descent with the lift operator.
Summer: hiking
The mountain is popular for walks in which the lift does the hard work. A well-known circuit leads from the top past the Alpengasthof Rigi and the Kraftalm to the Hexenwasser area, after which you return by gondola. The Hexenwasser can also be reached from Söll and Itter. Other targets nearby are the reservoir on the Hohe Salve and the Salvensee. If you prefer a real climb, you can walk up from Hopfgarten: described loops cover about 14 km with roughly 1,000 metres of ascent. Choose your route according to fitness and weather.
The Salvenkirchlein and the view
On the summit stands the Salvenkirchlein, dedicated to John the Baptist. It is described as the highest-lying pilgrimage church in Austria and is a lovely goal even for non-believers: small, simple and with a magnificent backdrop. The view is the main attraction. In good visibility you can see the Wilder Kaiser, the peaks of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern, with the Großglockner and Großvenediger far in the distance. If the weather is uncertain, pick another day, as there is little to see in cloud.
Winter: skiing
Hopfgarten and Itter give direct access to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, one of the larger ski areas in Tyrol; sources quote about 275 to 284 km of pistes, depending on how it is counted. The Hohe Salve belongs to this area. For which pistes, lifts and connections are open in a given season, consult the current SkiWelt piste map. For other winter sports on the mountain itself, such as ski touring or snowshoeing, we have no confirmed information; ask locally or at the Hopfgarten tourist office.
Mountain huts and refreshments
Along the walking routes you will find mountain huts and inns, including the Alpengasthof Rigi and the Kraftalm. The mountain also has catering at the summit and intermediate stations. What is on offer and on which days it is open changes with the season and weather, so do not plan around one particular hut, and carry your own water and an extra layer. With children in particular, a break with a cup of hot chocolate or a snack is a good way to split the walk, but check beforehand that the hut is open.
Safety
A mountain with a lift is still high ground. Weather can turn quickly, with afternoon thunderstorms a known summer risk; start early and keep an eye on the last gondola down. Wear sturdy shoes and take care on wet or cold paths. In winter, anyone leaving the marked pistes should consult the Tyrol avalanche bulletin (lawine.tirol.gv.at). This guide is not a route description to follow blindly and does not replace local knowledge or a mountain guide.
